What does a ghostwriter actually cost in 2026

Ghostwriting rates range from $0.05/word to $1.50/word. The 30x spread is not arbitrary. Here is what you are buying at each band.

Ghostwriting rates span from about $0.05 per word at the bottom to about $1.50 per word at the top end of celebrity work. A 30x spread looks wild until you understand what is actually being sold at each band.

$0.05–$0.10 per word: low-end

Offshore freelancers, less-experienced writers, or marketplace bottom-feeders. A 70k book at this band costs $3,500–$7,000. The work is sometimes acceptable for short, low-stakes projects (a 25k Kindle short, a how-to guide for an internal audience). At 70k for a serious book, this band rarely produces a manuscript an editor will not have to substantially rewrite.

$0.10–$0.25 per word: mid-range

Working professional ghostwriters early in their career or experienced writers in less-loaded categories. A 70k book at this band runs $7,000–$17,500. This is where the floor of acceptable serious ghostwriting starts. The trick: vetting. Some writers at this rate are excellent. Some are not. The marketplace does not sort them well.

$0.25–$0.50 per word: senior

Senior ghostwriters with shipped books, often with traditional-publishing credits. Our Standard ghostwriting tier ($9,800 for 50k = $0.196/word) sits at the lower edge of this band; our Professional tier ($16,400 for 80k = $0.205/word) sits firmly in it. A 70k book at this band runs $17,500–$35,000.

$0.50–$1.00 per word: premium

Founder books with high stakes, public-figure memoir, category-defining business books. A 70k book at this band runs $35,000–$70,000. Our Signature ($28,500 for 100k = $0.285/word) and Public Figure ($48,000 for 100k = $0.48/word) tiers sit here.

$1.00–$1.50+ per word: celebrity

Celebrity memoir, high-profile public figures, books with seven-figure expected advances. A 70k book at this band runs $70,000–$120,000. These engagements typically include a publication legal read, a partnered media-law attorney, and project management overhead that does not exist at lower bands.

What you are actually paying for

Three things. Time on your book — a senior ghost spends 250–400 hours on a 70k manuscript. Their hourly rate determines their per-word rate. Track record — writers with shipped books at known publishers command a premium because the work is verifiable. Risk insurance — at higher rates, the contract terms, NDA enforcement, and confidentiality protections are stronger.

What you are not paying for

Hype. A celebrity ghost charging $1.50/word may not produce a better book than a senior ghost charging $0.30/word. They have a different brand and a different client list. The per-word rate is not a quality index past about $0.25.

How to read a quote

Three checks. First, divide the quote by the target word count to get the per-word rate, then compare it to the bands above. Second, ask which band of writers will be on your project — named, with bibliographies. Third, look at the contract: NDA, non-attribution clause, revision scope, refund terms. The contract differences between bands are larger than the per-word differences.
