How to self-publish on Amazon KDP · 4 min read

KDP account setup — the right way to open it, the right way to lock it down

Account in your name. Tax filing in your country. 2FA on. Banking validated. The 30 minutes of setup work most authors skip.

Most KDP horror stories start with an account that someone else owns. The 30-minute setup work below prevents the most common ones.

Open the account in your own name

The KDP account holder is the person Amazon pays royalties to. That person’s legal name, tax info, and bank account are on the back of the system. If you let an agency or freelancer open the account for you, they are the account holder. You are not.

The right setup: you open the account at kdp.amazon.com using your own email, your own tax info, your own bank. If you want an agency to operate the account, you add them as an authorized user later. The account stays yours.

File the tax form

US authors: W-9. Non-US authors: W-8BEN (individual) or W-8BEN-E (entity). KDP withholds 30% on royalties to non-US accounts that have not filed a W-8BEN, regardless of your country’s tax treaty with the US. Filing the form correctly drops that withholding to your treaty rate (often 0% for the UK, 5% for India and many other countries).

Turn on two-factor authentication

KDP uses Amazon’s standard 2FA. Turn it on the day you open the account. Use an authenticator app, not SMS, if you can. SMS 2FA is vulnerable to SIM-swap attacks and the financial loss of a compromised KDP account with a five-book backlist is significant.

Validate banking before any royalty period

KDP pays monthly, 60 days in arrears. The bank account validation has to complete before the first payout cycle, which means setting it up the same day you open the account is the safest move. International authors: ACH transfer to a US bank is the smoothest if you have one (Wise Multi-Currency Account works); wire transfer to a non-US bank is the alternative and incurs $35–$50 in receiver fees per payout.

Fill in the author profile

Your KDP author profile is what appears on your books’ Amazon Author Page. Photo, bio, social links. Bookshelf curation later. The bio is 4,000 characters max; write it once, well, and it lives across all your books.

Set up the Amazon Author Central account

Separately from KDP, Author Central (authorcentral.amazon.com) is where you manage your Author Page. The accounts share a login but live in different dashboards. Author Central is where you add editorial reviews, add or claim books to your author page, and update your bio across regional Amazons (US, UK, DE separately).

What not to do

Don’t let anyone offer to “manage your account on their account.” Don’t open the account in a business name that doesn’t match your bank account. Don’t skip the W-8BEN if you’re outside the US.

That’s it. 30 minutes of clean setup prevents 95% of the support tickets we see from clients who came to us with already-broken accounts.
