The questions we hear every week

Direct answers. No marketing speak.

Thirty-five questions across rights, pricing, refunds, NDAs, international clients, ghost confidentiality, and timelines. If your question is not below, send it to hello@inkandchapter.com and we will reply within one business day.

The general questions

Do I keep the copyright to my book?

Yes. You own 100% of the copyright, 100% of the royalties, and 100% of the rights to translate, adapt, or option your work. We sign over rights to you in writing on day one, before any draft is delivered.

Do you use AI to write my book?

No. Every word of every manuscript is written by a named human writer who is on our payroll. We do use AI for research aggregation, fact-checking, and grammar pass utilities — never for first-draft prose. Read our human-writing pledge for the specifics on which tools we will and won't touch.

What does it cost to work with you?

Every service has published starting-from prices on the pricing page and on each service page. Real numbers, not "customized." The actual quote depends on word count, genre, and how much we're doing — ghostwriting a 70,000-word business book is different work from a 90,000-word memoir. The discovery call gives you a written quote within 48 hours.

How long does a book take?

For a from-scratch ghostwritten book, the working range is 14 to 22 weeks from kickoff to finished manuscript. Editing alone is 3 to 6 weeks depending on scope. Cover design is 2 to 4 weeks. Audiobook production is 5 to 9 weeks. We give a written timeline at the start of every engagement and refund pro-rata if we miss it by more than two weeks for any reason that's our fault.

What if I don't like the draft?

The first 5,000 words come to you for sign-off before we go further. If the voice isn't right, we either fix it or refund what's left of the project, whichever you prefer. Two structural revision rounds and unlimited line-level revisions are built into every project. The full eligibility detail is on the refund policy page — eligibility first, exclusions last.

Will you sign an NDA?

Yes. Mutual NDA before kickoff, every project, no exceptions. If you bring your own NDA we will review and sign it; if you don't, we use ours. Ghostwriters are bound by a permanent confidentiality clause in their contract with us — they cannot reveal your project even years later.

Do you only work with American authors?

No. About a third of our authors are outside the US — UK, Canada, Australia, India, the UAE, Singapore. We invoice in USD, accept wire and card, and ship physical proofs internationally where customs allows. Tax handling for non-US clients is on the international FAQ.

Can I see the team I'd be working with before I commit?

Yes. On the discovery call we propose a specific writer and editor by name, you can review their work, and you can ask for someone different if the fit isn't right. We don't anonymize the team. Everyone working on your book is listed on the team page.

Will my book actually be on Amazon?

Yes — on Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) for ebook and print-on-demand, and on IngramSpark for global wide distribution. We give you the login to your own KDP and IngramSpark accounts. You own the listings. We do not lock you into a contract that holds your book hostage.

What if I already have a manuscript?

We start with a 5,000-word sample edit and a written editorial assessment so you can see the level of work before paying for the full edit. Most authors with a finished manuscript only need developmental editing plus a copyedit; some need a restructure. The assessment is $250 and refundable against the full editing fee.

International authors

I'm not in the US. Can you work with me?

Yes. About a third of our authors are outside the US. We invoice in USD by Stripe (card) or wire. Time zones are usually fine because the work happens on a written schedule — most check-ins are async — but the discovery call needs to overlap with our 9am–6pm Pacific Time window once. We have run engagements across the UK, EU, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, the UAE, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

How does tax work for non-US authors?

We are a US C-corp and invoice in USD. For B2B clients (your own company is paying), you typically need a W-8BEN-E or local equivalent on file with your accountant; we provide one on request. For individuals, you pay the invoice in full and treat it as a foreign professional services expense — your local accountant will know the specifics.

Will my book be listed on Amazon in my country?

Yes. KDP distributes to Amazon US, UK, DE, FR, ES, IT, NL, JP, BR, CA, MX, AU, IN and a handful more. IngramSpark adds wide bookstore distribution in 40+ countries. Your book will be discoverable on Amazon in your country regardless of where you live.

NDAs, rights, and confidentiality

Will I own all the rights to my book?

Yes, in perpetuity, including translation, audio, film/TV adaptation, foreign-language editions, and merchandise. We assign all rights to you in writing the moment the first invoice is paid. The studio does not retain any back-end interest in your work.

Will you sign a mutual NDA?

Yes. Either you bring your NDA and we review and sign, or we use ours. Either way it's mutual. The NDA is signed before the discovery call if you want, before any reading of the brief if it's sensitive, and always before any team member sees the manuscript.

What if my ghostwriter wants credit?

They contractually cannot ask. Their contract with us includes a permanent non-attribution clause that survives the company and ten years of time. If you wish to credit them in the acknowledgements, that's your call — we will tell them after the project is delivered if you say yes.

Do you use my manuscript to train AI?

No. Your manuscript is not pasted into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or any model whose terms allow training on submissions. We use Grammarly configured for no-storage on the copy edit pass. Beyond that, no AI sees your text.

Ghostwriting specifics

Will the writer ever be on a podcast about my book?

No. The non-attribution clause prohibits public association with the project, including podcasts, panels, social posts, LinkedIn portfolio entries, and conversations with other clients. If a journalist asks them directly, they decline.

What if my ghostwriter leaves the studio?

Their confidentiality and non-attribution obligations survive their employment with us. They cannot reveal the project after they leave any more than while they are with us. The contract is between them and the company, not just between them and you.

Can I commission a sequel from the same ghostwriter?

Yes, and most authors do. We hold pricing on the same per-word basis for 24 months after first delivery, and the same writer is offered first refusal on the sequel. About 30% of our ghost clients write a second book with us.

Will the same writer help me with talks or articles based on the book?

Yes, billed hourly at $90/hr. Many of our business-book clients use the writer for follow-up talks, articles, and op-eds for 6–12 months after launch. The terms are the same — confidential, non-attribution.

Refunds and timelines

What is your refund policy in plain language?

Three windows. Before the voice sample (typically week 2): full deposit refund minus time-and-materials, which is usually under $500. After voice-sample approval and before chapter four delivery: pro-rata refund of deposit. After chapter four: refund limited to undelivered chapters. The full eligibility detail is on the refund policy page — written eligibility-first, not exclusions-first.

What does pro-rata mean in this context?

If you've paid the 33% deposit ($3,300 on a $10,000 project), and the writer has spent 8 hours on outline and voice work that wouldn't be reusable for you (the same outline can't always be handed to a different writer), the pro-rata calculation refunds the deposit minus that work. Typical refund at that stage runs $2,400–$2,800 of the $3,300.

If you miss your timeline, do I get a refund?

If the slip is our fault and exceeds two weeks, you get 1% off the remaining balance for every additional week missed, capped at 15%. This appears on the contract.
